The New Year is always a great time for re-evaluation, and looking forward to everything we want to accomplish in the coming year, whether that be in our personal life or in our business. 

If you've not spent time thinking about and setting some 2024 goals already then I really recommend that you put some time aside to do so.  I'm not just talking about New Year's resolutions – they are fun and great, but they often get broken. I'm talking proper, strategic goals that you will actually stick to and enjoy ticking off as you complete them!

Have you written a list of all the things you want to achieve this year? If not, have a think and write a quick list now before you move on.

Try to think about the things that you could do that will really move your life forward, or move you in the direction you want your life to go.

Get clear about 

what you really want

Now is the time to really think about what you want to achieve this year. Are you going to be focusing on one specific goal, or do you have several things you really want to accomplish? Do you have a financial goal you want to achieve, or a desire to be debt free? Do you want to start a business, or get a big promotion? Or maybe you want to meet new friends, or spend more time with your family.

To help you get clear on this, just close your eyes and imagine what your life looks like at the end of 2024. Imagine you are looking back at what you have achieved. What are the things you are the most excited about?

You want to get really specific!

What is it that you have now that you didn't have at the start of the year? I recommend just spending a few moments really visualising and getting into the feeling that you've now got exactly what you want. 

I really believe that doing this exercise will help you become a lot clearer about what you want to accomplish.

5 STEPS to setting goals you'll achieve... 

Now go back to your list of goals and pick 2 or 3 of the big goals that fit with the vision you just had.

They should be easily identifiable, and they will most likely be the goals which will propel you forward the most this year, whether that's in your personal or your business life.

Once you've chosen your goals, please make a commitment to yourself that you are going to accomplish them.

And if you are ready, now's the time to grab a pen and a notebook and follow the next 5 steps that will set you up for achieving that vision you just enjoyed so much!


Write Down Each Goal & Be Specific!

In your notebook you are going to write each goal out at the top of a separate page.

If you have one overarching goal which is more important then start with that. This will become your primary goal.

When writing out your goal at the top of each page you need to make the goal specific. Getting really clear is the key to setting goals you'll achieve.

Which one of these sounds more achievable?

Example 1: "This year I want to save enough money for a deposit on a house."Example 2: "By December 2024 I will have saved £30,000, which is the amount I need for the deposit on my new house."

The second one is much more achievable because it leaves no doubt as to what needs to be achieved.

This is known as a SMART goal.


In marketing we follow this whenever we create a campaign, so that everyone knows what it is that we need to achieve, and so that we can ensure that the campaign is easy to monitor, stays on track, and actually gets completed.

Setting your goals this way, no matter what they are about (it doesn't need to be for business or marketing), is a great habit to get into and will definitely lead to you accomplishing more.

In the example above we can see that the goal is specific. It is measurable because there is a monetary amount and a deadline, and it is relevant because it's needed in order to buy a house. You also want to make sure your goal is achievable. It's ok if you think it's a stretch because that's how we grow and we need to push ourselves to progress in life, but just make sure it's not totally out of reach. And it also needs to be time managed. There's a deadline given which gives us a basis to work from. And that's what we are going to tackle in the next steps.

STEp 2

Write down 3-5 small tasks that get you on your way to achieving each goal

Now you've identified your key goals, the way to achieve them is by breaking them down into smaller, manageable tasks. 

Often at the start a of New Year we announce our big goals and tell ourselves we will achieve them, but then we don't do much about it. Or we make a start and then lose our way. This is because we have no clear path, no real direction of where we are going.

By identifying the steps we need to take in order to get us closer to our goal, it gives us that clear path. It's like a beacon lighting the way, reminding us of where we need to go.

When I create a marketing plan, I break down the strategic yearly goals into quarters, and set goals for each quarter that will enable me or my clients to achieve those bigger goals. Then each quarterly goal has its own set of specific tasks or campaigns that need to be carried out. and you can do the same for whatever goal you want to achieve.

Identify 3-5 tasks – be clear about what you need to do, and write them down.

For each of your main goals I want you to write down 3-5 tasks that you can start working on, that will get you closer to your goal. Remember that you only need to start small, and it's all the small wins that really add up!

Using my example above, 3 tasks towards achieving that goal might be:

1. Create a spreadsheet of all outgoings, look at where savings could be made & calculate a figure.
2. Look at bank statements for the last 6 months and identify where I am spending money where I don't need to. Work out how much I could save instead.
3. Ask for a pay rise! Write down the reasons why I believe I should be considered for a pay increase, and approach my manager to put forward my case.

As you can see, these tasks are easy and manageable. They are not complex and neither do they take a long time. Doing even there first task would get you on that path to achieving the goal you desire. 

Write down 3-5 tasks that you can start work on now for each of your goals.

Schedule a time to complete each task

So now you have a goal, and 3-5 tasks that you need to complete to get you achieving that goal.

Next, you need a deadline for each task! This is the T in SMART

You are going to schedule in a time when you are going to work on each task. Be realistic here – make sure you factor in a time when you know you won't get distracted, and give yourself enough time to do what needs to be done. There's nothing worse than starting but not finishing, so give yourself the time you need.

In the examples above, each of the 3 tasks would take no longer than an hour to complete. So this is definitely achievable, and would see you ticking off tasks pretty quickly.

Get out your diary, planner, or use the calendar on your phone or laptop and schedule in time to complete each task. Also, set 2 reminders/alarms on your phone – one for a day before, and another an hour before, because this will keep you on track so you don't forget.

Complete the task!

This is an obvious step, but how many times have you scheduled in something that you have planned to do but then don't actually do?

I am so guilty of this, especially because I used to suffer from a bad habit of procrastinating. In my work I would always follow through for my clients and stick to all of my deadlines, but when it came to doing something for myself, for some reason I would often give myself an out or just not have the time for what I had planned. Maybe you can relate?

How did I overcome this? Well, in truth I'm still working on it. I did some deep work on understanding why I procrastinate about things in my own life, but I don't when it comes to helping others. Maybe I'll do a post on that at some point as it might be helpful. Let me know in the comments if you'd like to hear more.

Affirmations will really help you!

One thing that does really help me to beat procrastination is by using affirmations every day. Specifically ones that are focused on boosting productivity. More than anything, you must make a commitment to yourself. You've already decided that this goal is important to you, and you know how it will feel once you've achieved it (through your visualisation), so all you need to do is to commit and don't let anything get in the way of you completing each task. When you do this, you'll be amazed at all the goals you'll achieve. 

And here's a tip! Try not to see it as a long list of tasks that you need to complete, but instead view each one as a small, individual job that you can complete, which WILL move you forward.

So you've chosen your goal, created a list of tasks, scheduled times for them and set an alarm as a reminder. Now you need to simply complete each one in turn.

If something comes up and you need to re-schedule that's fine, things do happen. But just make sure that you schedule in back in for as soon as possible and don't re-schedule it again. You simply must make it a priority.

step 5

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat!

Once you've completed all your tasks for one of your goals, you just repeat steps 2,3 and 4 again. Just identify your next 3-5 tasks that will move you towards your goal, then schedule them and complete them. You just keep repeating the process.

And don't forget to celebrate your wins as you go! Each time you complete one of your tasks, take a moment to think about what you've achieved (even if you think it's small), and how it's one step closer to your amazing visualisation.

Do something fun, treat yourself to something – anything. Just make sure you acknowledge that you've had a win. It's all the little wins that add up.

top tip!

This post is all about getting started and taking those first steps, but if you want to track your progress even more, then I suggest breaking your main goal into quarterly targets.

This works great for achieving sales in business, saving a monetary amount, or losing weight for example. You can then check in at the end of every month to see how close you are to your quarterly goal. It will also help you to set tasks that are the most relevant in getting you to your quarterly target.

  • Pick 2 or 3 big goals that you know if you achieve will move you forward
